From Lauwersoog, the Strandweg winds through the Groningen part of the Lauwersmeer National Park. At several places you will find a parking spot - at beaches, near a bird-watching hut, to take a nice walk.

Have you ever heard of: the Babbelaar, the Vlinderbalg, Achter de Zwarte Gaten? All small waters and areas in the Lauwersmeer, where you are not allowed to go, not even with a boat. This is the domain of e.g. the peregrine falcon, spoonbills, black-tailed godwits and other rare birds. You might be able to spot them from one of the bird-watching huts you might encounter along the way.
National Park Lauwersmeer is one of the most important bird areas in Western Europe. Lauwersmeer is an indispensable link in the bird migration; a massive migration of birds in spring and autumn. Millions of birds then travel many thousands of kilometres from their breeding areas to the wintering areas or vice versa.
